About Belle Glos Wines
Belle Glos (pronounced Bell Gloss) is a vineyard-designated Pinot Noir label founded in 2001 by Joseph “Joe” Wagner, of the famous Wagner family (of Caymus Vineyards fame). The name honors his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, who was a co-founder of Caymus and a passionate lover of Pinot Noir.
Where They Grow & Their Terroir
Belle Glos sources fruit from several of California’s most respected coastal vineyard sites, each with distinct climate, soil, and elevation that contribute to the flavor and character of their wines.
Clark & Telephone Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley: one of the older Pinot Noir sites, planted with the Martini clone, benefiting from cool maritime breezes and fog.
Las Alturas in the Santa Lucia Highlands: planted high with careful clone-selection and low yields, giving wines rich intensity and elegant structure.
Dairyman Vineyard in Russian River Valley: planted on what used to be dairy land, this site enjoys cooling morning fog and coastal influence that elongates ripening and produces refined fruit.
Winemaking Philosophy & Style
Belle Glos wines are known for lush, fruit-driven Pinot Noirs with character that reflects both their coastal vineyard origins and Joe Wagner’s winemaking approach. Some of their signature practices include:
Letting the grapes hang until they are physiologically ripe (beyond just sugar ripeness), to develop complexity and depth.
Employing cold fermentation methods and careful handling to preserve aromatics and freshness.
Using vineyard designation (naming the specific vineyard) to showcase how different soils, exposures, and microclimates contribute to Pinot Noir’s diversity.
Their bottles are instantly recognizable thanks to the iconic wax-dipped necks, which have become part of the Belle Glos identity. PR Newswire
